About Messinia

Province of Messinia

PILOS, METHONI, KORONI and KIPARISSIA, these four small towns are typical of the “green” province of Messinia with its busy capital of Kalamata. Endless olive groves, vast beaches, wild mountains and green hills surround them. The coast is fringed with lovely islands to complete this subtropical corner of Greece. Each village has its own castle, its own character and atmosphere, and each is different from the others. Between them lies the small resort and fishing village of FINIKOUNDA , unknown to tourism until recently. Inland are numerous small farming hamlets, little changed over the years.

Messinia's Advantages:

The Climate
This region has the most agreeable climate of the Greek mainland. The winter months from November until March have similar weather to Tunis or Agadir. The summer lasts a couple of months longer than in Corfu (Kerkyra), to the north. Regular summer winds tame the higher temperatures.

Accessibility
The airport at Kalamata (60min drive) makes the journey from Northern Europe easy, but luckily, not so easy that the area is over-run with package tourists. Athens airport is now directly connected to Kalamata with a new highway (3:40hr drive), and if you don’t have a car in Greece, car hire is good value for money compared to most other European countries. Daily car ferries  to Ancona(19hr) and Venice also connect Patras.
Scenery
It’s green all year, in spite of the warm southern climate. Offshore islands and inshore mountains add great interest to the views, with stunning sunset views from the West Coast.
The Beaches
Long, clean, uncrowded, sandy beaches, gently shelving into the sea. Don’t disturb the turtle nests though.
Value for Money
Mainland prices are some 10% to 20% lower than island prices, and few other north Mediterranean areas can offer houses with excellent access to such beautiful beaches at such low prices. Infrastructure program of the Greek government and also the expansion of the real estate market will increase the value of your property.
